Color Palette Challenge!

So I saw a challenge going around some artist friends, where they presented a list of color palettes to other people, asked them to pick a number and a character, and make art. I thought it looked like a good bit of fun and an interesting color challenge, so I gave it a shot! Not too many, but here are the results:

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III (How to Train Your Dragon)

Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist)

Queen Elsa of Arendelle (Frozen)

Prince Hans of the Southern Isles (Frozen)

Hiro Hamada (Big Hero 6)

Kristoff Bjorgman (Frozen)

Inktober 2014

It's been a while since October came and went, and I realized I ought to share the results of a month's work.

I tried to challenge myself by picking different subject matter for each day and did my best not to repeat. There are exceptions, though. One of which being Spider-Man, as I did both the Spider-Man drawings on the same day to make up for missing the first day of the month. The other is using myself and my roommate as drawing subjects several times, but I tried to keep the styles of each of those drawings very different.

So without further ado, here it is. Inktober 2014!

Back to Boarding

So I guess 2 years is a pretty long time to go without blogging. Whoops? But I come bearing fruits of labor!

I've been trying to get back into storyboarding, and as an exercise, I tried making boards for songs from broadway. I chose to go with Rent, because... Well, I have a little bit of history with it. I had heard the entire soundtrack a million times over before I ever went to see it performed on stage. In fact, I think I only got to see it on stage just a little bit before the movie came out. As a result, I had formed images and movies in my head that were affected only by the song's lyrics. And of course, they were quite a bit different from what actually ended up on screen or on stage.

So I took one of the songs that I felt was most impactful to me. One of the ones that I had the strongest vision for. And that was Goodbye Love. Here are some of the boards I started:

Not the greatest, but practice makes perfect, right?

Art Evolution

it's been forever since i put anything up here... and i was just mentally comparing the last things i put here to the most recent things that i've doodled.

it's really pretty incredible how much things can change in a matter of months.

random doodlings of boredom

the changes are hardly drastic, and probably hard to notice. but i notice, and it fascinates me to see. :P ...and to be fair, these are a bunch of really rough sketches, so they're totally whatever.

anyway, to see some of my recent, finished art... it's here at my deviantArt.

Last of the Cindys

here's the final set of the Cinderella pics. clearly i only focused on the China story and the Ireland story. that said here we go:

in the Chinese story, the emperor put the golden shoe on display in a pavilion to see if anyone would come and claim it. rather than go door to door, which i guess would be pretty damn exhausting.

oooooh, shoe display!

one of the last lines of the Irish Cinderlad story was cute. when the princess finds Becan and marries him, it turns out they're about the same height. and so she says "This is perfect, for I know that this way we shall always see things eye to eye." LITERALLY. ...well, i thought it was cute. maybe because i'm short.

and he shall make a fine, big-footed king. :3

and now... just some solo shots of each of them. Becan first, then Yen-Hsien.

and that's the end of that project. that was fun :3

Cinderella

my friend asked me if i could make a bunch of sketches to different Cinderella stories from around the world. so i took a crack at it.

first up: Egypt. which is the story of Rhodopis.
the story of Rhodopis involves dancing, 3 houseservant women who think they're better than the Greek imported slave, a hippo, monkey, and birds, a shoe stealing hawk, and of course, the pharaoh. it was interesting.

Next: Ireland.
in Ireland, it's not a girl. it's a boy named Becan, who has huge feet as opposed to Cinderella and her tiny feet. his stepmom and her three daughters are all huge jerks and threaten to kill his friend the magical speckled bull, so he runs off with the bull. the bull dies in a fight with another bull, and Becan is told to take his tail (it will help him!). at some point he fights a giant and takes his shoes. and then he goes and saves a princess from a dragon, but runs off when it's over, leaving behind one enormous boot. and the story's familiar from there on out.

and then there's China.
in China her name is Yeh-Hsien, and her story involves a magical fish that she caught and raised until it was over 10 feet long. her father's 2nd mother tricks her into leaving and kills the fish. but the bones grant Yeh-Hsien's any wish, so she gets pretty clothes to go to a festival. her 2nd mother spots her, so she runs and leaves behind a shoe. the shoe is found and gets sold to the emperor, who goes looking for the girl who fits it.

there's also a Filipino version and an African version that i was gonna sketch stuff for, but i pretty much passed out last night. so. that's all i've got. :P
